Huehuetenango near the Mexican border in Guatemala’s west is renowned for its exceptional coffee. In general, specialty coffee from Guatemala is sweet, highly acidic and full of character; this lot from La Ponderosa holds true to this description. La Ponderosa is one of several farms owned by the Perez family (of the ‘El Zapote y Anexos’ group). The farm is managed by fourth generation coffee producer Wilfrido and his son Hernán, both of whom place strong emphasis on environmentalism and sustainability. The coffee is hand sorted, milled and dried at the El Zapote wet mill before being packaged and shipped. El Zapote has seen a significant amount of success with the Cup of Excellence competitions, most recently placing 2nd in 2018. La Ponderosa makes a beautifully well-rounded espresso style coffee with intense notes of toffee, plum and walnut with a gentle citrus acidity.
