When the opportunity arose to open a café in one of South Australia’s most iconic tourist destinations, entrepreneurs Marie Risley and Jennifer Schmitz leapt at the chance. Guten Appetit is a newly opened German-inspired eatery just half an hour from Adelaide in the idyllic town of Hahndorf; a tree lined village proud of – you guessed it - its German heritage!
Marie, a budding interior designer whose appetite for design is matched only by her passion for food, has created a gorgeous contemporary atmosphere conducive to food, drink and family. The décor is simple and homely yet modern and chic. The combination of warm oak panelling with simple white tiles lends a clean and timeless quality to the overall feel; a lightness that is reflected in the menu.
Jennifer brings with her 25 years of experience as a chef. A first-generation Aussie with German heritage, her infusion of German - or more specifically – cuisine of the Rheinland region is evident in the menu. Contrary to the traditional Australian idea of German food, Jennifer’s menu is very light and approachable, much more in keeping with true German fare.
Our favourites on the menu:
The Pfannkuchen (Pancakes) particularly the Apfel (apple) Pfannkuchen. German sweet pancakes with toasted pecans, apple, caramel sauce and double cream.
The Kartoffel Salat (potato salad) is a house favourite also. Potato, bacon, red capsicum, dill, gherkins, red onion, egg and a creamy mayonnaise dressing. When asked how this can taste so amazing Jennifer will only disclose that the secret is in the dressing.
Guten Appetit proudly serves two Dimattina blends. If you order a black coffee you will be rewarded with a the sweet delicate flavours of Little Hill while milk-based coffees are prepared with the bold and balanced Ronnie’s.
Open 8am – 4pm every day except Tuesday. Guten Appetit is a must if you’re visiting Hahndorf.
