We spent International Women’s Day down by the Swan River supporting
Casey Edmonds
’ inaugural “
Text Me When You Get Home
” walk - a 50km overnight journey raising funds for Perth-based charity
We Are W.M
.
From sunset on 7 March through to sunrise the next morning, Casey walked the river loop while supporters joined in along the way. The route runs about 10km each lap, so walkers could jump in for a single loop, multiple laps, or the full stretch.
The evening kicked off with mat pilates hosted by
Pri Pilates
, prepping everyone for a big night on foot.
From there, the walking began. Grace and I joined Casey for her first lap at 6:30pm where we got to watch the sun set over the Perth skyline and experience the power of this event. Even surrounded by safety and empowerment in numbers, walking half the loop in complete darkness revealed just how fragile our sense of safety can feel.
Casey started the event to ask one simple question:
why is safety after dark still not equally experienced?
“
Text me when you get home
” is a message that has become second nature for many of us. A simple sentence that carries a much bigger meaning.
Through the night, different groups joined Casey for laps along the river, keeping her safe and the energy high with over 300 attendees throughout the event.
By sunrise on IWD, McCallum Park had turned into a bit of a community hub.

There was warm coin-donation breakfast thanks to
Flight Centre
, a recovery station set up from
Fitstop Victoria Park
with an ice bath and recovery boots, and
Fleur Skincare
offering facials for walkers looking to reset after the long night.
Grace and Julia set up our coffee cart nearby, which was a welcomed sight for sore eyes (and feet), quickly becoming a popular stop for walkers, runners, volunteers and supporters.

Just after sunrise, Casey completed the final stretch of her 50km walk, finishing alongside a local running group who joined her for the last lap.
After a full night around the river, her mission was complete, by no easy feat.
An impressive $15k was raised from the walk which will go directly to
We Are W.M
, a Perth-based not-for-profit dedicated to educating young people on consent, respect and healthy relationships across Western Australia.
A long night, a strong community, and a pretty meaningful way to spend International Women’s Day. We're proud to be part of this one, thanks for having us, Casey.
