There are some coffees we look forward to each year, and Anastase Minani’s is one of them.
Grown in Rwanda’s Gakenke District at 1,960 metres above sea level, this washed Red Bourbon is a rare single-producer microlot in a country more commonly known for larger, blended washing station lots. That traceability reflects the care behind it.
We first visited Anastase in 2019 and saw firsthand the role he has played in shaping coffee production in the region over more than five decades. As a founding member of the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, his farm continues to set the standard for those around him.
In the cup, it’s beautifully tea-like, reminiscent of fresh iced tea, with notes of lemon and nectarine. Light, delicate, and well-balanced. One we’re always glad to see return.
Last year, our WA flagship café co-hosted a fundraiser with Melbourne Coffee Merchants in support of the Rambagirakawa women’s group in Rwanda. What began as a series of events here helped fund a childcare centre for women and families connected to the same community and washing station where this coffee is processed. Sharing this coffee is a full-circle moment we don’t often get to experience.
