Muhathi is a five-hectare farm in Kiambu County, owned by Peris Wambui Karugondo and run with the help of her son Sam. The land has been in the family for generations, passed down from Peris’ grandparents, who planted their first coffee trees in the wake of Kenya’s land reforms in the 1960s.
Alongside Sam, Peris manages every stage of production, from pruning and soil health to cherry selection and washing. The family still uses the original wet mill built by their father in the 1980s, and despite the challenges of small-scale production, they continue to produce coffees of remarkable clarity and quality.
This lot is a washed selection of SL28, SL34 and Batian, grown in rich volcanic soil and processed using fresh Komothai river water. In the cup, it’s everything you hope for in a great Kenyan filter: bright, layered and clean, with notes of crystallised pineapple, blackcurrant, strawberry and nougat sweetness.
