Volcan Azul is a name widely associated with high-quality coffee. A multi-generational enterprise, Volcan Azul began with two coffee producers back in the early 19th century: Alejo C. Jimenez and Wilhelm Kahle. Nowadays, Volcan Azul is known far and wide as one of the pioneers of coffee in Costa Rica and is still pushing the envelope as to what constitutes ‘the best’ coffee. The H3 variety is a purpose-bred hybrid of the common caturra and an Ethiopian landrace variety. It was originally part of an experiment to develop new coffee varieties that were resistant to ‘leaf rust’, a persistent disease that affects coffee trees in many parts of the world. H3 turned out to be susceptible to leaf rust and so was discarded as a potential variety for widespread distribution; it did however taste amazing! Costa Rica was used as a testing ground for H3, and many producers decided to continue growing it for its unique flavour profile. This red honey processed lot from Volcan Azul has notes of kiwifruit, lime and honeycomb. An extremely punchy and vibrant coffee that is perfect as black filter-style or espresso.
